MTS announces 1999 results

Mobile TeleSystems has announced the results of its work in 1999. Last year the cellular operator installed over 350 GSM-900 base stations, including 111 in Moscow, 116 in the Moscow region, and the rest – in 15 other regions; as well as 72 GSM-1800 base stations. The number of subscribers grew by 170 percent and exceeded 400,000. In 2000, the operator plans to invest about $100 million in the development of its network. The money is to be spent on a new switch for 150,000 subscribers, the installation of about 500 new base stations, the creation of cellular networks in 16 Russian regions, the introduction of commercial WAP services and the testing of GPRS technology.
