Cisco accuses Nortel of libel over Telia contract
Last week the Russian office of Cisco Systems published a press release in which it accused the Russian office of Nortel Networks of unfair competition and libel. According to Cisco, the reason was as follows. Over a month ago, on September 6, the Swedish newspaper Dagens Industry reported that a contract between Telia and Cisco Systems for the delivery of equipment was canceled. On September 8, Nortel Networks announced that it had won a contract for the delivery of equipment to Telia. On September 9, the agency Bloomberg published a story in which Telia officials were quoted as saying that the contract between their company and Cisco had not been canceled and the order won by Nortel was not to replace the contract with Cisco. According to Cisco, the chronology of events proved that Nortel had released deliberately false information. Despite of this, the Russian office of Nortel Networks on October 12 distributed "the initial falsification among Russian customers and partners of Cisco... to prevent the upcoming conclusion of contracts between Cisco and some Russian public networks operators".
