Microsoft may face Importation problems with Windows 2000 in Russia

According to the Federal Agency for Governmental Communications and Information (FAGCI), if Microsoft Windows 2000 operating ships with 128-bit encryption it will be illegal to import it under current Russian import restrictions on encryption software. Russian import restrictions prohibit the unlicensed sale of any foreign software, containing encryption algorithms. Microsoft has announced that Windows 2000 will utilize a 128-bit encryption algorithm. Commenting on the situation, head of the Russian office of Microsoft Olga Dergunova says that her company “does not plan to break the law by importing prohibited algorithms”. She says that the matter will certainly be settled with FAGCI, although, “it’s not very easy” to withdraw encryption algorithms from the system.
