Formoza launches own branded motherboards

Formoza has officially announced that it has created a new division specializing in the design of electronic devices. So far, the design bureau has developed four system boards based on Intel chipsets: i810F-AT (available since August, 1999 at $67), i810F-ATX (just released at $70-$75), i820F-ATX (being tested now, $83-$87), and i815F-AT (to be released in May, $83-$85). The bureau also develops audio and video cards. In May, the company plans to release a card based on an Intel chipset and combining a modem, a network interface card and an audio card. According to Formoza production manager Oleg Kvas, his company produces 1,000-1,500 boards each day. The vendor’s own boards account for about 30 percent of the production volume, while the remaining 70 percent are manufactured under a license agreement with Lucky Star. About half of all Formoza-branded computers utilize Formoza-branded boards. At the same time, only 25 percent of all boards being sold by Formoza are sold as part of computers. According to sales representative of Intel Tatiana Andreeva, Formoza motherboards “can be sold as successfully as the products of other manufacturers, such as Asustek and Abit not only in Russia but also in Eastern Europe”. Ms. Andreeva says her company will help Formoza promote its boards in Europe, allowing the Russian vendor to demonstrate its products at events being organized by Intel for its European partners. According to Mr. Kvas, today Formoza sells 300-400 boards a month through its office in Germany. However, once the whole product line of the design bureau is ready for sale – probably by the end of summer – the vendor will “take more active steps to promote its products” in Europe.
