Gostelecom to Favor Local Suppliers In Attempts to Solve Y2K Problem

The Ministry of Finance of the Russian Federation has confirmed that it will allocate 2 billion rubles from the state budget and attract $50 million of foreign loans for the solving of the year 2000 problem in the country's governmental structures. According to deputy chairman of the State Committee for Telecommunications Alexander Volokitin, the terms for attracting the loans have not been determined yet, but some of them are expected to be bound with obligations not to purchase the equipment from foreign vendors. The government plans to buy about 50 percent of the hardware from domestic computer vendors. Only if the necessary equipment is not produced in Russia, it will be purchased abroad. For example, Gostelecom has already signed a framework agreement with IBM for the delivery of S-390 computers. All the deliveries of both domestic and imported equipment will be performed by two companies - Technoserv and Avtopromimport, with the latter being responsible for work exclusively with the Ministry of Defense.
