Rostelecom boosts international Internet capacity

Russia's national telecommunications operator Rostelecom has signed an agreement with the American company Teleglobe Communications for the leasing of a 52 Mbps link to the Internet to accommodate significant annual growth of the Internet traffic in Russia. According to the Russian carrier, in 1998 Internet traffic grew four times and its newly-leased line is already running at 60 percent of its capacity. The agreement brings Rostelecom's total international Internet capacity to 70 Mbps. By the end of the year the company plans to further increase it to 100-140 Mbps.
