Veles-data Computer Center and the Institute of Electronic Management
Machines (IEMM) have announced that they have started a joint project to
reanimate the production of computers under the SM trademark, which was well
known in Soviet times. The computers will be based on Siemens and Intel
platforms, and the product line will include industrial computers, servers,
as well as office and home computers. Pilot samples of the new machines are
now being certified by Rostest. The computers will be assembled to order at
a site being leased by the institute to Veles-data. The site is expected to
be equipped with facilities necessary for the assembling as well as for the
testing of computers. Veles-data plans that the production process will
pass the ISO 9000 certification. The partners expect the production volume
to reach 1,000 units a month by the end of this year. Initially, warranty
and post-warranty support will be provided by Veles-data service center,
with plans to gradually reanimate the former network of Soviet SM service
centers in Russia and other CIS countries.
