Pentacom has announced a pilot project to build a broadband hybrid
fiber-coaxial network in the Moscow region. The network will support
Internet, telephony, and cable TV services. The pilot project is scheduled
for completion in the first half of 2002 and calls for the connection of
about 50,000 apartments in the city of Mytischi. Pentacom was founded by the
Dutch company Russia Broadband Communications last spring Within the next
five years, Pentacom plans to expand the network to 27 cities in the Moscow
region and connect about 1 million apartments. Pentacom customers will be
offered a number of tariff plans, depending on the number of TV channels and
the speed of Internet connection chosen. For example, a 1 Mbps connection
will cost 500 roubles (about $17.5) a month. According to Pentacom general
director Kenneth Rogers, the five-year project is valued at $250 million.
Pentacom's principal investor is the Russian-American investment foundation
Delta Capital, which majority owns Russia Broadband Communications.
