Ministry of Railways to invest $533 million in telecommunications

The Ministry of Railways has announced that it is starting a $533 million project to build a nation-wide digital fiber optic telecommunications network. Although the idea of the project was initially driven by the need for the Ministry to improve the monitoring of the movement of freights, it will also enable it to set itself as a major telecommunications operator in Russia, capable of competing with the country’s long-distance and international carrier Rostelecom. That is, of course, if and when the project is completed.
