Minsviazi announces annual results

The Ministry of Communications and Information has announced that in 1999 the industry’s revenue totaled 101.9 billion rubles. The revenue of traditional operators amounted to 74 billion rubles. Foreign investments totaled $90 million, and domestic investments – 15.5 billion rubles. In 2000, the investments are expected to grow to $134 million and 17.2 billion rubles respectively. Of the 17.2 billion rubles, 8.6 billion rubles will be invested by telecommunications companies themselves. Last year, the companies put into operation a total of 1.42 million city telephone lines, 144,000 rural telephone lines, 33,000 intercity channels, and 29,200 international channels. New radio relay lines totaled 3,855 km and new intercity cable lines – 11,948 km. A total of 134 satellite earth stations were built. The number of mobile subscribers grew by 606,000 and amounted to 1.4 million. GSM networks serve 750,000 users.
