Compaq cuts ties with IBS Group
The Russian office of Compaq has announced that it made a decision not to prolong its distribution agreement with Dealine, which expired on February 24th and to deprive IBS of its Compaq authorized systems reseller status. According to Compaq marketing manager Svyatoslav Sorokin, in its work in Russia Compaq relies on strategic partnerships with a few local distributors, which, in turn, should consider Compaq as a strategic vendor. While acknowledging the professional skills of Dealine staff, a Compaq statement says that in the fourth quarter or 1999 IBS Group made a strategic decision to promote the products of one of Compaq’s major competitors – an obvious reference to Dell. According to IBS vice president for distribution Sergey Eskin, “we were surprised by the announcement, especially taking into account that Dealine was identified as the best Compaq distributor in 1999”. Dealine, IBS and Dell Systems (the exclusive distributor of Dell Computers in Russia) are all part of the IBS Group of companies. Despite being the exclusive distributor of Dell in Russia since 1993, IBS Group had until now managed to also maintain good relations with Compaq. In statements to the press neither company have described the precise reasons for this disagreement.
