Microsoft uses direct marketing to combat pirates

The Russian office of Microsoft has sent out 7,000 letters to the press, banks and other organizations, signed by its general director Olga Dergunova. Referring to multiple requests from BSA to provide information on companies and organizations in Moscow and the Moscow region using illegal copies of Microsoft products, the vendor warned the addressees that if their names are not in its users database it will be forced to inform BSA accordingly. Microsoft also offered legalization of pirated products that can be revealed as a result of the campaign by purchasing official copies from its resellers at a significant discount. According to Microsoft department for combating computer piracy manager Evgeny Danilov, the program is primarily aimed at combating piracy caused by unawareness. Research undertaken by the vendor showed that in organizations with more then 10-15 computers the top management does not even know what kind of software they utilize.
