MCC starts building new mobile network

Moscow Cellular Communications has announced that it is starting the
creation of a pilot mobile network, working under the IMT-MC standard. The
network infrastructure will be based on Lucent Technologies equipment, while
mobile handsets will be supplied by Hyundai Electronics. At the moment, the
two vendors are the only manufacturers of IMT-MC equipment for 450 MHz.
However, according to deputy general director of MCC Mikhail Kosinov, by the
beginning of 2002 the Ministry of Communications and Information is expected
to consider the results of this pilot project and make a decision to allow
NMT-450 operators of the federal SOTEL network to migrate to the new digital
standard. By that time, other vendors will possibly be able to offer such
equipment as well. Mr. Kosinov also says that the operators will spend about
$100 million on the first stage of SOTEL upgrade, which calls for concurrent
use of NMT-450 and IMT-MC-450. The whole project to make SOTEL fully digital
is valued at about $1 billion.
