Personal Communications, the operator of the Moscow CDMA network, working
under the SONET trademark, has announced that it has completed the upgrade
of its network. Last year the company started to replace Qualcomm equipment
previously installed on its network with Lucent Technologies hardware. This
included the implementation of a switch for about 100,000 users (today the
operator serves some 25,000 subscribers) and about 100 base stations. The
project was valued at $40 million. The money was provided by a number of
Russian and foreign banks. This year Personal Communications also plans to
invest about $40 million in the development of its network. Plans call for
the network expansion in the Moscow region, the development of regional
networks, and the introduction of new services, such as SMS, voice mail, and
high-speed data transmission (up to 144 mbps). The company has already
started commercial operation of its first regional network in the Vladimir
region and pilot operation of a network in the Yaroslavl region. Within the
next two or three weeks CDMA networks will also be launched in the Tver and
Tula regions.
