Moscow overlay network operator, Sovintel has announced that it is starting
the second stage of a project to build a fixed wireless network for
broadband access in Moscow. The operator plans to install about 10 Siemens
base stations and Lucent Technologies wireless local loop systems. Combined
with four base stations already installed during the first stage of the
project, the network will cover about 50 percent of the city. The project is
scheduled for completion in summer 2001, with services to become available
by the beginning of 2002. After that the company intends to start the third
stage of the project to cover the whole territory of Moscow. IDC will be
publishing a bulletin on the broadband access market in Russia in March 2001
