Compaq, Intel start shipping eight-processor servers in Russia

The Russian offices of Compaq and Intel have announced that the eight-processor servers - the Compaq ProLiant 8000 and 8500 based on Pentium III Xeon and the Intel Profusion chipset are now available for order in Russia. Actual shipments will start in November. According to Compaq manager for open industry standard servers Victor Gorodnichy, the price of ProLiant 8000 and 8500 in a basic configuration - including one processor and the Profusion chipset - will be close to that of the quad-processor server ProLiant 7000 in a similar configuration. The upgrade of a quad-processor machine to an eight-processor system will cost 40-50 percent of the price of a server in a basic configuration, he says. Compaq also presented Toucan, an entry-level integrated cluster which combines two double-processor servers Compaq ProLiant 1850R based on Pentium III. Its shipments are to start next month at a price of about $15,000.
